Year 4 Literacy
Children are provided with opportunities in year 4 to improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills daily via interactive lessons, guided reading sessions, drama and cross curricular links to other subjects.
Regular input at home will embed and enhance children’s confidence and ability.
Reading
Children are expected to read at least every other night their book from school which is linked to the reading scheme, or in some cases, off the reading scheme at an advanced level. A record of reading should be kept up-to-date in children’s orange diaries and brought into school daily, so books can be monitored and changed accordingly.
Children also participate in guided reading sessions with the class teacher or LSA as well as share texts during the daily literacy hour or in other subjects.
Writing
Children in year 4 concentrate on either non- fiction or narrative writing each half term.
Autumn 1 Poetry + Non- Fiction Autumn 2 Narrative
Spring 1 Poetry + Non- Fiction Spring 2 Narrative
Summer 1 Narrative + Revision Summer 2 Non- Fiction
Children have plentiful scope to improve their writing skills. The latter stages of units of work are planned to provide ample time for children to draft, edit and improve their work. Word level and sentence level work is incorporated into sessions for children to continually improve their work. Children also have writing focus lessons and other opportunities to write in other curriculum areas.
Speaking and Listening
Children have opportunities throughout the curriculum. Firstly, and most importantly, children are encouraged to “have a go” and try to be actively involved in lessons by listening carefully. Pupils then will be able to respond to opinions and statements and stories accordingly and lessons become more purposeful. These are further built upon in most subject areas, including drama and history.
