Year 1 is the first year in Key Stage 1, but has very strong links with Foundation Stage (Reception). During the Autumn Term, children learn in a similar style to that experienced in Reception. Year 1 children still have access to learning through sand, Role Play, Puppet Theatres, listening centres, computers and much more. We work hard throughout the year to encourage the pupils to work more independently and equip them with the skills necessary for them to access the curriculum in Year 2. The three Year 1 classes follow the same curriculum and the pupils' work is planned together on a weekly basis by the Y1 teachers; Mrs A Spencer (Y1AS), Miss A Morton (Y1AM) and the Year 1 leader Mrs V Woodcock (Y1VW). They are also assessed by the teacher and the level is reported to parents in annual reports.

Homework

Homework is set on a Monday and is always linked to literacy and numeracy topics for each week. Homework in Y1 is often practical and involves discussion. Please therefore sign your child’s diary when homework is completed, as they are rewarded for reading and homework on a class chart. The class with the most stars for the week in Y1 receives a trophy for that week. The star chart is completed on a Friday.

Please take time to read with your child for ten minutes every night and add a comment or sign their homework diary. Pupils who practise their reading regularly at home tend to make significant progress and it also helps your child in all areas of the curriculum.
P.E
Indoor PE lessons are as follows:
Y1AN – Wednesday
Y1VW – Thursday
Y1AS – Friday

Your child will require black short and a white T Shirt.
Outdoor P.E is on Monday and pupils will need to have warmer kit such as a tracksuit and also pumps or trainers.
